Rick & Morty Proves an MCU Hero Shouldn’t Have Survived His First Movie

While battling a cosmic villain akin to Marvel's Thanos, Rick and Morty prove that one MCU hero should not have survived his first movie.

While battling a multiversal threat in the pages of a series continuation comic book, Rick and Morty prove an MCU hero shouldn’t have survived his first movie. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has given fans a live-action look at some of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, but a few of their stories ended a bit too quickly and abruptly. One powerful MCU villain in particular would have definitely won in the final battle against the pesky heroes trying to stop him, and Rick and Morty just proved that to be true.

In Rick and Morty Presents: The Vindicators #1 by J. Torres and CJ Cannon, the cosmic superhero team the Vindicators recruit Rick and Morty to help them battle a multiversal threat. During the final showdown with the powerful villain, the leader of the Vindicators, Vance Maximus, decides to take on the enemy one-on-one in a manner MCU fans are very familiar with, and he is killed immediately.

Instead of engaging in epic combat with the powerful threat, Vance Maximus challenges him to a dance-off. Since the villain, Boon, was wielding cosmic artifacts akin to Marvel’s Infinity Stones, he shot Vance with a fatal blast right away. This scene is a clear parody of a similar one that played out in the MCU film Guardians of the Galaxy only with a much more grim outcome. In the movie, the villain Ronan was wielding one of the Infinity Stones, the Power Stone, and was gearing up to destroy an entire planet. The leader of the Guardians, Star-Lord, distracted Ronan by challenging him to a dance-off which gave the other Guardians enough time to blast Ronan with a powerful weapon which made him lose control over the Power Stone. The only reason this worked at all is because Ronan stopped what he was doing and stared at Star-Lord rather than just using his godly power to destroy him. Rick and Morty points out that a villain with that much power who was intent on causing epic destruction wouldn’t just stop what they’re doing to gawk at someone out of confusion, concluding that Star-Lord should have definitely died in his first film.

When the MCU method doesn’t work in defeating this Thanos-like Rick and Morty villain, Rick initiates a battle tactic that is much more brutal and way more on-brand with this series’ tone. To defeat Boon, Rick uses a Meeseeks box and produces hundreds of them, giving them all the task of destroying Boon. The blue-skinned temporary lifeforms swarm Boon like a horde of fire ants and brutally rip him to shreds, a method that is much less colorful than a final dance fight showdown but one that proved to be very effective. Throughout this issue, Rick and Morty mock a number of superhero properties by way of ridiculous parodies and on-the-nose callouts. While some are absolutely ridiculous, this one which challenges the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty accurate and makes it clear that Star-Lord really shouldn't have made it past his first film.

Ronan was ruthless, and while wielding the power of the Power Stone he wouldn’t let anything distract him from his mission, especially something so trivial as a dance-off. Rick and Morty proves an MCU hero shouldn’t have survived his first movie by playing out the same final showdown scene in its own comic with a much bleaker outcome.
